MLB Hall of Fame Catcher Gary Carter to be Honored by Junior Achievement
Hall of Fame Catcher, Gary Carter will be honored by Palm Beach County residents on May 2nd. Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches, Inc. proudly announces that the Sheriff Ric Bradshaw/Junior Achievement Golf Classic, to be held at the Ironhorse Country Club on Friday, May 2nd will honor Gary Carter for his achievements both on and off the field.
During his career, Gary “Kid” Carter established himself as one of the premier catchers in the National League. He won three Gold Glove awards (1980, 1981, 1982), and five Silver Slugger awards (1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986). He also played first base and outfield and was in fact chosen for his first All-Star Game roster (in 1975) as an outfielder rather than as a catcher. His energy and talent drove the New York Mets to the World Series title in 1986. In 2003, Gary Carter was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, becoming the only representative of the Montreal Expo’s, who retired his #8. A firm supporter of youth causes, Gary Carter strongly supports Junior Achievement’s efforts. Junior Achievement President James S. Gavrilos notes: “Gary Carter’s commitment to youth is so evident in everything he does. We at Junior Achievement appreciate his participation in this year’s Golf Classic. And once again, we salute Sheriff Ric Bradshaw for his own commitment to Junior Achievement. We in Palm Beach are blessed to have a sheriff who understands the challenges and is prepared to face them head on.”
Junior Achievement is the world’s largest non-profit devoted to educating young people in the areas of financial literacy, work-force readiness and entrepreneurship. JA of the Palm Beaches, Inc. reaches nearly 25,000 students annually in South Florida. Some take part in classes taught by J.A.’s dedicated volunteers. Nearly 10,000 students will visit JA BizTown or JA Finance Park this year. At BizTown, local 5th graders experience a day in the life of a business owner by “running” a simulated business. Future C.E.O.’s learn about budgeting, staffing, advertising and the “bottom line” in a fun-filled day of activity. Finance Park brings 7th and 8th graders to the J.A. Offices for a day of simulated “life decisions” that challenges them to face the long-term financial consequences of daily choices. Gavrilos adds: “Each day in America, 7,000 students drop out of high school. We at Junior Achievement believe that by encouraging children to stay in school and get an education, we are changing our society, one child at a time. We are showing the connection between receiving an education and being ‘work force ready’ in a global economy.”
Registration at Ironhorse Country Club will begin promptly at 7:00 A.M. on Friday, May 2nd, with a “shotgun” start at 8:00. Following the day’s golfing, participants will enjoy a lunch and awards ceremony and silent auction, which will include a number of items signed by Carter himself. During the tournament, players will compete for longest drive, closest to the pin and a special “Beat the President” hole, where they will have the opportunity to “out drive” Junior Achievement’s President, James S. Gavrilos. For more information on this wonderful opportunity to support Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches, contact Debbie Lackey at 561-242-9468.
