It is the ability to recognize potential in a young person-innate abilities and special talents-that can take a “usual” life and make it remarkable. JA believes that every child deserves the chance for a “remarkable” future. According to the Alliance for Excellent Education, each year around 1.3 million teens fail to graduate high school. Locally, with nearly one in five students not graduating from high school, educators report the ability for organizations like Junior Achievement to inspire the entrepreneurial spirit in these bright youth to use their typically high levels of creativity to create opportunities for themselves and others, is an opportunity that can change lives. JA SPARK Youth Career & Entrepreneurship Development is a new effort that works with proven education elements combined for the first time in a high-impact formula. At its core, the initiative introduces JA It’s My Future, JA Career Success and JA Be Entrepreneurial curricula and concepts behind career exploration, soft skill development, entrepreneurial thinking and creation and operation of a business. Community volunteers provide JA Launch Lessons; interactive presentations targeted to inform participants about the many career cluster choices as well as paths toward success. Additionally participants will be provided with JA Job Shadow experiences; a visit to a professional work environment and an opportunity for them to gain insight into how to find and keep a fulfilling career.
JA SPARK Youth Career & Entrepreneur Development is a program for Middle and High School students who have a passion for discovering their path towards STEM careers or entrepreneurial endeavors. Depending on the need of the community and school; students can participate during Winter, Spring and/or Summer school breaks and other out of school-time hours. During the week long program, students will participate in the JA Career Success, JA It’s My Future and JA Be Entrepreneurial curriculum. The content challenges students; through interactive activities; to discover their personal brand, identify career options, develop soft skills and potentially start their own entrepreneurial venture while. Providing useful, practical content to assist teens in the transition from being students to contributing members of society; unlocking the innate ability to solve a problem or fill a need in their community through an entrepreneurial spirit.
JA SPARK is the ultimate extension of JA's mission as it blends career focus with experiences that allow students to discover their passions. Its alignment with schools, where the organization is seen as a primary external partner, provides texture to the lessons being learned. As the students who will participate are only a few years away from entering the workforce, the time is right to launch this initiative that will provide direction, inspiration, and a focus on a complete education. Through our relevant, authentic, and experiential financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship programs, we are inspiring a generation to be financially capable and tenacious. JA SPARK connects education to real-world concepts to heighten students' appreciation for academics and long-term aspirations, giving them vision to see what's possible in the future and the skills to achieve their dreams. JA SPARK infuses business connectivity and role models into all aspects of learning to deepen students' understanding and sustain engagement. JA SPARK delivers opportunities to apply academic concepts to enhance students' retention of knowledge and develop skills for success, bringing lessons to life
Summative evaluations of JA’s current entrepreneurship programs show that as students have positive increases in knowledge of and attitudes toward business creation, increasing the likelihood that these students undertaking entrepreneurial activities as adults. JA SPARK will also provide a safe environment for young people to explore their future and gain skills during out of school times when they are at much greater risk for risky behaviors leading to long-term consequences.
