It is no secret that our professional identities are evolving and are no longer just about what we do from 9-5, but what we’re passionate about outside of work. When you add the Volunteer & Causes section to your LinkedIn profile, you are able to share not only the causes you care about, but also list nonprofits that you’re involved in (like JA®!), in much the same way you’d add work experience to your profile.

When you volunteer, you’re not only making a positive impact in your community and on the world, you’re also advancing your own career. Here’s some compelling research:

So it only makes sense why you would want to make this information available to anyone who view your profile. And by including this section and listing your experience with Junior Achievement, you are providing an implicit endorsement for JA® and help us build our brand on LinkedIn. It's a win-win for everyone! 

But of course, most of you don't need any convincing. So let's cut to the chase and show you how you can add the Volunteer Experience and Causes section to your LinkedIn profile.


Before adding your volunteer experience to your page, be sure to search for "Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches & Treasure Coast" and click the yellow "Follow" button on the right hand side of the page. This will ensure that you stay up-to-date with the what's happening at Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches & Treasure Coast and that any relevant articles we share show up on your feed.


"Volunteer Experience," "Causes you care about," and "Supported organizations" are just a few "Sections" that are able to be added to your LinkedIn profile to increase your profile's strength. In order to add these sections to your profile follow these steps: 

  1. Log into your LinkedIn account.
  2. Once on the homepage, choose the drop down menu at the top left of your screen that says "Profile" and when the drop down appears, select "Edit Profile."
  3. Directly underneath the box with your photo and title in it, you should see a box that reads "Add a section to your profile - be discovered for your next career step." 
  4. If the sections "Volunteer Experience," "Causes you care about," and "Supported organizations" are not immediately visible, click the "View more" drop down until you find each of them and click on each of them to add them to your profile. 
  5. Once added to your profile, you can then enter specific information into each section.



  1. To add your volunteer experience with JA®, go to the "Volunteer Experience" section you just added and begin by clicking "Add volunteer experience."
  2. Then, in the "Organization" field, you can begin typing "Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches & Treasure Coast" and the organization should be recognized and you can select it from the drop down list. 
  3. Under "Role," feel free to enter whatever you would like or you can simply enter in "Volunteer," or "Volunteer Teacher," depending on the capacity in which you volunteered with JA®. 
  4. Under "Cause," again, feel free to enter whatever you would like, or the listed causes that could apply include "Children," "Economic Empowerment," or "Education."
  5. Enter the date that you volunteered with JA®. 
  6. Finally, you can add a description of your volunteer experience. Here are some examples you can use if you need inspiration, but feel free to add in your own personal anecdotes to make it unique to your experience.

    For a Traditional Classroom Volunteer: I served as a Junior Achievement® volunteer at <NAME OF SCHOOL> for a class of <GRADE LEVEL> students. The weekly Junior Achievement® program takes place in a child's classroom, during which volunteers present one of JA®'s proven financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship programs to a K-12 classroom on a weekly basis, coordinating the schedule with the teacher. During my time with these youth, I guided students through experiential curriculum on topics that will one day help them answer the demands of the 21st century economy with "I can," stopping along the way to share my own perspective to bring the program to life.
  7. Once you type in the information you want to include, click "Save" and the changes will be saved to your profile. 


  1. First, go to the "causes you care about" section you just added. 
  2. You will see a question that asks "What cause(s) do you care about?" along with a list of "causes" you can choose from with boxes that you can check beside each. Obviously, you can check all of the boxes that apply to you, but the ones that we believe directly relate to JA® are "Children," "Economic Empowerment," and "Education."
  3. Underneath "Causes you care about" you can also add Organizations that you support (Instructions in the next section). 
  4. Be sure to click "Save" and then the changes will be saved to your profile. 


  1. If you haven't yet navigated away from the "Causes you care about" section, you should see another question directly underneath "What cause(s) do you care about?" that reads "Which organization(s) do you support?" If you have, however, navigated away from the section, but you have saved the "Causes you care about," you can simply hover over the cause you entered until you see a blue pencil for you to "edit." Click on the cause you entered once it turns blue and it should bring you back to the section with "Causes you care about" and "Organizations you support" 
  2. Under the question that reads, "Which organization(s) do you support?" you can simply begin typing Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches & Treasure Coast to find us on LinkedIn. Once it comes up, click on it to add it to your list. You can also choose other organizations you support and enter each of them separated by Tab or Return.
  3. Once you type in the information you want to include, click "Save" and the changes will be saved to your profile.
